A strong commitment from Microsoft
Like other tech companies from the USA, Microsoft is increasingly at the center of attention in this country: the White House's current policy is not exactly promoting trust in its cloud services. This is why the statement by Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President, is so important (box).«In a time of geopolitical volatility, we are committed to ensuring digital stability.»
Essentially, it is about a broad-based cloud and AI ecosystem, Europe's digital resilience, data privacy, Europe's cyber security and strengthening economic competitiveness.
«We have always found Microsoft to be a reliable partner,» says Michael Kistler, CEO of Baggenstos. «That's why the recently published commitment is particularly strong,» he adds. Also because Microsoft plans to expand its data center capacities by around 40 percent and to 16 European countries over the next few years. Microsoft intends to spend tens of billions of euros annually on this.
Independently managed data centers
The European data centers are to be independently managed by EU citizens. Microsoft also assures that it will never cease its cloud activities in Europe and will defend itself in court against such orders. European data is to remain protected at all times. The company also wants to expand cyber security in Europe. Microsoft also wants to offer new security and encryption options in future and create an environment in which only the customer controls the data.
With the help of two joint ventures in France and Germany and by depositing a backup copy of all source codes in Switzerland, Microsoft wants to defend itself against legal action. The so-called “Sovereign Cloud data centers” offer Microsoft services under the control of France and Germany, managed and operated by local employees.
You can rely on Baggenstos and Microsoft
In his statement, Brad Smith also emphasizes the importance of respecting European values and complying with European laws. «We recognize that Microsoft must continue to focus on earning and maintaining its ‹license to operate› in every country in Europe. For data centers and digital technology, that starts locally.»
Also in Wallisellen. Baggenstos and Microsoft are closely connected. «Our customers have always benefited from the highest possible security and placed their trust in us,» says Baggenstos CEO Michael Kistler. According to his estimate, Microsoft has set the course for digital stability in Europe and Switzerland just right. «We are proud to move into the future with a company that is among the pioneers of the IT industry.»
