Artificial intelligence at Microsoft Ignite 2023
This time, we are dedicating two exciting contributions to Microsoft Ignite 2023: The first puts artificial intelligence (AI) in the spotlight, with ground-breaking developments that fascinate both experts and laypeople alike. The next article will focus on innovative microchips, which were also an exciting topic at Ignite.
The most important innovations
At the Ignite conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced numerous innovations, mainly relating to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Microsoft products and the expansion of its infrastructure, particularly Azure, for future AI services. Here are the most important innovations:
- AI-optimised processors and chips: Introduction of AI-optimised Microsoft processors, intensified cooperation with Nvidia and development of two new chips.
- Microsoft Azure Maia: AI accelerator chip for cloud-based training and inferencing of AI workloads, including OpenAI models, Bing, GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT.
- Microsoft Azure Cobalt: A cloud-native chip based on ARM architecture, optimised for performance, energy and cost efficiency.
- Azure Boost: A new system that accelerates storage and networking by shifting these processes from the host servers to specially developed hardware and software.
Extended partnerships with hardware providers
- AMD MI300X-beschleunigte virtuelle Maschinen (VMs): To accelerate the processing of AI workloads, equipped with AMD's latest GPU, the AMD Instinct MI300X.
- NC H100 v5 Virtual Machine Series: Designed for NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs, focussed on performance, reliability and efficiency for mid-range AI training and generative AI inferencing.
- ND H200 v5 Virtual Machine Series: An AI-optimised VM with the upcoming NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPU.
These announcements emphasise Microsoft's commitment to further developing its AI infrastructure and expanding its hardware partnerships.
Unfolding the future of AI
The importance of Azure AI chips: The introduction of the Azure Maia and Azure Cobalt chips by Microsoft is a quantum leap in AI technology. The Azure Maia chip, designed for cloud-based training of AI workloads, optimises the processing of AI applications. Azure Cobalt, based on the ARM architecture, offers optimal performance with increased energy and cost efficiency.
Versatility of the Microsoft Copilot
Copilot, Microsoft's flagship product in the world of AI, has reached a new dimension with various extensions. Copilot for Microsoft 365 is now generally available and is already being used by leading companies. Microsoft Copilot Studio opens up new avenues in low-code development, while Copilot for Service and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides enable the integration of generative AI and mixed reality in service and production areas.
Microsoft Fabric - The connection of data and AI
Microsoft Fabric stands for an innovative combination of data management and AI. This platform enables teams to efficiently link and analyse data, leading to improved AI applications and a stronger data culture. Microsoft is expanding its Copilot offering with a wide range of new functions and integrations:
- Microsoft Copilot Studio: A low-code tool for customising Microsoft Copilot by integrating business-critical data and creating your own Copilots. Copilot Studio uses connectors, plugins and GPTs for optimised data source integration.
- Microsoft Copilot for Service: Provides role-based support to accelerate AI transformation in customer service. Integrates Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 to enhance existing customer contact centres with generative AI.
Copilot in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides: Combines generative AI and mixed reality to help employees in service and production complete complex tasks more efficiently. First available on HoloLens 2, it offers interactive guidance through content and holograms.
Microsoft Copilot for Azure: An AI companion for IT that simplifies the management of IT tasks and provides a unified chat experience. It improves the ability to design, operate and maintain apps and infrastructure components and provides new insights into workloads. - Copilot for all: Microsoft is working on making Copilot accessible to all users and is starting to integrate it into Bing. Bing Chat with AI is now called Microsoft Copilot.
For Microsoft Entra customers, Copilot provides additional enterprise-level data protection, with general availability from 1 December 2023. Copilot will also be available to users of Entra ID (formerly Azure Active ID) at no additional cost.
New horizons for developers
The introduction of Azure AI Studio and advanced GPT models offers developers more flexibility and control. These tools enable deeper integration and customisation of AI models in different applications. Conclusion: Microsoft Ignite 2023 impressively demonstrates how AI will transform the way we work and live. The technologies and tools presented lay the foundation for an intelligent, efficient and networked future.
