Teams 2.0: Deadline extended until July 2025
Microsoft is responding positively to the concerns of its customers and is offering an extended grace period for the switch to Teams 2.0. Instead of urging users and administrators to migrate to the new desktop version as early as April, Microsoft has decided to extend the deadline.
Classic Teams desktop app can still be used until 2025
Although technical support is still scheduled to end on 1 July of this year, customers can continue to use the classic Teams desktop application for at least another year until 1 July 2025.
New options for switching to Teams 2.0
This decision was communicated in the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre and offers users more flexibility. However, the extended grace period only applies to modern operating systems such as Windows 10, Windows 11 and MacOS versions from "High Sierra" (10.13). For older operating systems such as Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Mac OS Sierra (10.12), classic Microsoft Teams will only be supported until 23 October 2024.
Microsoft gives users more time for the changeover
Customer-orientated decision: Microsoft will inform users of Classic Teams within the application about the official end of support and ask them to switch to Teams 2.0, but will give them until summer 2025 to comply with this request.
More time for the changeover
Until then, they can simply ignore the warning. This decision shows that Microsoft is taking the needs of its customers seriously and giving them more time to prepare for the changeover.
